Farmers Market Manager

About the Farmers Market Manager:

This is an ideal position for someone with retail and produce experience looking to take on a management role at a mission-driven family farm. Fishkill Farms sends homegrown vegetables, fruit, cider, eggs, jams and other jarred goods, frozen produce, and flowers to five local and NYC markets at different points throughout the year. The manager will act as a liaison between the farm’s different production areas (fruit/vegetable/egg/etc.) as they come together for market, and ensure that high standards are consistently met.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Oversees all aspects of the farm’s year-round markets, both local and NYC
  • Acts as an ambassador of the farm, shares the farm’s vision with the public and creates a welcoming retail experience.
  • Drives our refrigerated box truck to at least one market each week.
  • Trains and manages 10+ city and local market workers.
  • Involved in pack shed and harvest duties.
  • Packs produce and supplies for all markets.
  • Develops and communicates to market workers new displays and market strategies.
  • Maintains market equipment and supplies, market sales records.
  • Handles fruit and vegetable ordering for markets, takes the lead in the vegetable pack shed.

  • At least one full season on a farm or at farmers markets preferred.
  • Driven - there is room for the market manager to pursue other venues for produce sales, coordinate and expand the farms donation program, work with the farm store to increase on-farm produce sales, or follow other marketing projects of interest.

Schedule:

This is a year-round, full-time position beginning immediately. Work week runs Wednesday through Sunday, with hours ranging from 40 to 70, and averaging around 55/week over the season.

Requisites:

Valid driver’s license, a clean driving record, and your own transportation. Experience driving large vans or trucks, or willingness to learn.

Compensation:

Hourly rate commensurate with experience.

Farmers Market Crew Member

The Farmers Market Crew Members are the ambassadors of the farm at various farmers markets, and create a welcoming, informative and enjoyable shopping experience for the general public. Farmers Market Crew Members work closely with the Farmers Market Manager to set up, attend and break down the weekly farmers markets at various locations.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Drive to, unload and set up farmers market stands
  • Post appropriate signage (banners, pricing, certifications, etc.)
  • Provide excellent customer service and communication
  • Knowledgeably and enthusiastically discuss our our products and our organic/sustainable farming practices with the public
  • Create and maintain a visually appealing farmer’s market display
  • Conduct accurate sales transactions
  • Keep market supplies organized and maintained (containers, signs, tables, tents, etc.)
  • Perform inventory at the end of the market day
  • Unload truck and return produce and supplies to designated areas

Our Ideal Candidate Is:

  • A great communicator who is able to deliver excellent customer service
  • Able and enthusiastic to dependably work long weekend shifts, starting in the early morning
  • Enthusiastic about organic agriculture and interested in having meaningful interactions with the public around food and farming
  • Has at least 1 year of cumulative retail experience.
  • Willing to learn to safely operate various trucks and vans in New York City on designated routes
  • Happy working independently or as part of a team

Vegetable Production Team Member

About Fishkill Farms

Fishkill Farms is a 270 acre fruit and vegetable farm in East Fishkill, NY. Our homegrown organic vegetables and eco-certified fruit is marketed through our year-round Farm Store and Pick-Your-Own operation, our 400-member CSA, and several farmer’s markets locally and in New York City. Starting with peas and strawberries and culminating with apples and pumpkins in the Fall, the farm provides family friendly outdoor-fun for the local community. At our peak we host thousands of visitors daily.

About The Position

Our Vegetable Production Team is at the core of our farm’s diverse vegetable operation, and participates in every aspect of planting, growing, harvesting, storage and sales for more than 100 varieties of certified organic vegetables grown on 20 acres. They will work alongside a team of talented and diverse farmers in various settings, from our three greenhouses to our fields, packing shed, and farmers markets. Team members will also have the opportunity to interact directly with customers through attending and running one local farmer's market stand or CSA pickup each week. This is a fun and challenging position for those with previous farming experience seeking to take their skills to the next level at a mid-size organic farm. Our uniquely diverse range of fruits and vegetables, the opportunity to participate in various marketing activities, as well as the availability of local educational CRAFT meetings and workshops will provide ample learning opportunities for crew members.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Greenhouse work from seeding to transplanting, watering and maintenance.
  • Direct seeding and planting in the field as well as trellising and pruning crops.
  • Hoeing and mechanical cultivation, mowing, hand weeding and mulch laying.
  • Harvesting, washing and packing for multiple market outlets from CSA to wholesale.
  • Merchandising, display setup and communication with customers about the farm’s production practices at markets and CSA pickups.
  • Working with and/or operating various farm machinery such as forklifts, vegetable washing line, farm trucks as well as tractor driven planting, cultivation and harvest implements.
  • Opportunity for growth through specializing in the various aspects of our operation, including crew leadership and employee management.
  • This is a seasonal, full-time position beginning in the spring (April) and ending mid-November, averaging 55 hours/week, with the possibility of year-round employment.

Proficiencies and Qualifications

We’re looking for hardworking, detail-oriented folks with at least one season’s experience farming to join our team.
Must be ready to take on the demanding schedule, pace, and inevitable challenges of a farming season with consistency and good humor; ability and enthusiasm for performing repetitive/challenging tasks in all weather conditions.

Assistant Farm Store Manager

About the Position

The Assistant Farm Store Manager will work alongside our Store & Pick-Your-Own Manager to oversee store operations and Pick-Your-Own sales of our homegrown fruits and vegetables along with hundreds of other locally-made products. They will participate in sales, customer service, food preparation and cleaning to provide a top-notch experience for our customers.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties

  • Oversee daily operations of the store including opening, closing, as well as cleanup on the Store Manager’s days off.
  • Responsible for successful daily operations through a variety of specific tasks including: product ordering, inventory, point of sale system maintenance, cleaning, food preparation, merchandising, and customer service.
  • Scheduling, direction and feedback to staff, employee orientation and training.
  • Coordinating with dozens of local vendors to procure products in all departments including produce (local and homegrown), dry goods, grass-fed meats, cheeses and dairy & preserves.
  • Assist Store Manager during weekend hours with up to three additional shifts during the week. (Total hours will not typically exceed 40 except at peak season). Flexible scheduling.

Proficiencies and Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years of retail/food industry experience with some management-level experience.
  • Technological proficiencies: Work with Farm Store's POS system, Inventory System, Google Docs, Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Desire to work in a mission-driven small agricultural business
  • Good organizational and leadership skills including ability to manage staff with varying roles and levels of experience and commitment
  • Love of food, farming, and a passion for sustainable, community-oriented agriculture is a must!
  • Availability to work 20-50 hours a week depending on season, including weekends
  • Food preparation and experience in commercial kitchens a strong plus.
  • Must be comfortable lifting heavy boxes and bags up to 50 pounds

Compensation

Field & Grounds Crew

About the Position:

We’re seeking enthusiastic and candidates to join our Field & Grounds Crew, assisting in various areas of agricultural production, landscaping and grounds maintenance on our family farm. Crew members will contribute to the farm’s mission of growing healthy, sustainable produce for the local community, and helping maintain the farm as a destination for the local community. It’s an ideal role for someone eager to learn more about farming, who would enjoy a variety of outdoor work. This is a seasonal, hourly position, and can be part or full-time.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Landscaping and grounds maintenance in our public areas, including mowing with ride-on mowers or tractors.
  • Working with and/or operate tractors to prepare ground, plant, cultivate and harvest crops.
  • Customer service, traffic control and parking assistance on weekends and pick-your-own days, especially in the fall harvest season.
  • Proactive maintenance of farm tools and equipment through cleaning, greasing and proper using.
  • Irrigation and fence construction, general carpentry etc.
  • Manual labor in our production fields including planting, hand-weeding, trellising, pruning and harvesting fruits and vegetables
  • Operation of forklift and other farm machinery such as vegetable washing line and farm trucks.
    Potential for additional work in our farmer’s market and farm store retail areas.

After over 100 years of growing apples, family owned Fishkill Farms has begun producing top quality hard cider called Treasury with our fruit. The name invokes the spirit of the farm’s founder, Henry Morgenthau Jr., who served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury under president Roosevelt, and speaks to the stewardship involved in planting and tending an orchard, growing cider apples; and to their transformation into a golden liquid.

While commercial cider is often over-sweetened and made with under-ripe, poor-quality fruit, Treasury Cider is made like a fine wine- it is dryer and less carbonated and pairs wonderfully with a variety of foods.

About the Cidery Sales Manager:

This is an ideal position for someone with sales experience in the wine, cider and beverage industry looking to take leadership in developing a new venture at a family-owned, mission-driven farm. We are looking for candidates with some previous management experience who truly enjoy fine wine, beer, spirits or cider, to help us cultivate sales of Treasury Cider at our various outlets. Primary sales will be at our seasonal tasting tent, open on weekends in the summer and fall, where our cider and other locally-crafted alcoholic beverages are sold by the tasting, glass or bottle. This is a hands-on position making sales and conducting tastings as well as training and managing tasting attendants to create a positive experience for every guest. The Cidery Sales Manager will also be responsible for attending various farmer’s markets, and growing our wholesale program to restaurants and wine stores, locally and in New York City. Our ideal candidate is highly-motivated, loves interacting with customers, and is enthusiastic about taking on a challenging new role in a quickly growing business. Teamwork, a sense of humor, great organization and initiative, and true appreciation for exceptional food and drink are vital for success.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Handling routine purchasing transactions, including operating cash registers and accounting for daily sales
  • Responsible for the smooth operations in our tasting tent areas including setting up, opening, closing, glass-washing and general cleaning/maintenance.
  • Help hire, train and schedule a staff of one or more tasting attendants to serve cider in flights and full glasses to guests with an upbeat and inviting demeanor
  • Help plan and launch a cider sales program at our five farmer’s markets, including training market staff and attending markets in person.
  • Sampling cider for and delivering to local restaurants and wine stores
  • Represent the brand through tastings and sales opportunities at off-farm food and drink festivals and events
  • Develop expertise in the production methods and styles of hard cider, with an in depth understanding of our product and the farm’s history; able to talk with confidence about our products.
  • Labeling bottles, managing inventory, creating invoices and tracking sales to ensure proper recordkeeping.
  • Promoting our cider not only in person but through developing content for social media and the farm’s other media channels

About the Tasting Room Attendant Position:

We’re looking for candidates with a passion for customer service and a knowledge and appreciation of fine wine, beer or cider, to learn the details of the ciders we produce and join the team at our family farm. This position is a part-time, seasonal role, and work is mostly outdoors, serving and interacting with the customers who visit our cider garden and farmer’s markets.

Essential duties include but are not limited to:

  • Serving tastings, flights and full glasses to guests with an upbeat and inviting demeanor
  • Knowledgeably describing each cider and the differences between varieties
  • Educating guests on the cider making process as well as the history of Fishkill Farms
  • Multi-tasking between individuals, small and large groups, and other bar-related tasks
  • Expanding their own cider education and knowledge
  • Ensuring ciders are adequately stocked in the retail area
  • Handling routine purchasing transactions, including operating cash registers and accounting for daily sales
  • Performing facility housekeeping, to include Tasting Room, restrooms, patio, and break areas, daily
  • Completing duties from opening and closing checklists
  • This position will also work occasional shifts in our farm market store and must be willing to help in other areas of the farm

Farm Store Team Member

About the Position:

We’re looking for responsible and vibrant Team Members with a strong work ethic, excellent attention to detail, and friendly, outgoing demeanor to join this dynamic farm. Farm Store Team Members work under the supervision of the Store Manager, assisting customers the farm store, preparing seasonal, farm fresh meals in our kitchen, and working in our outdoor Pick-Your-Own areas and seasonal grill.

This is a great opportunity to work for a mission-driven company helping feed local customers great food, and to learn more about food and farming in the Hudson Valley. Employees receive a generous discount in the store and fresh surplus produce from the farm.
